Pictures of Tents and Pavilions in the 14th-century Catalan
Atlas
This source was produced in Majorca, Catalunya, probably in 1375 (the
date that appears on the perpetual calendar in the book), and was
apparently disseminated rapidly, as it appears in an inventory of
Charles V dated 1380.
More information
on the manuscript is available at the Bibliotheque
Nationale de France, from whose on-line exhibition of illuminations,
The Age of Charles
V, these pictures were downloaded.
- The whole four-page map of Europe,
North Africa, and Asia. Its relevance to the "tents" page is mainly the
cluster of tents in the northwestern corner of Africa.
- The two pages on Europe and North
Africa. Shows the same cluster of tents in slightly greater detail.
- The North Africa section of the map.
Shows the same cluster of tents in even more detail.
- The People of Gog and Magog. This
picture doesn't include a tent proper, but it has a lovely
parasol-sorta-thing being held on long poles over the head of the
mounted King of the aforementioned People.
